Paisas vs. Rolos, Medellin vs. Bogota

Paisas are people from Medellin / Antioquia; rolos are from Bogota.

Check out this video of a paisa woman living in the US. Between 0:36 – 1:26 she talks about paisas and rolos. It’s translated to English below the video.

—-

My translation of 0:36 – 1:26:

In Colombia I thought rolos and paisas were always enemies. They have an absurd rivalry. I have no idea how it started.

Ahh the rolos are so boring and polite. They’re uptight and they don’t like anything. The city’s cold and the people are bad.

The rolos say paisas are storytellers and liars. Paisas are talkers (I’m a paisa). They say paisas are pure hagglers, they only think about business and ?saving money?.

In Colombia I realized rolos and paisas just don’t get along well, never will. Here in the US I realized it’s not true. My best friend is a rola. I say to her “You’re such a rola” and she says “this exaggerating paisa” because we’re very exaggerated / flamboyant / [difficult to translate].

So it’s funny here in America. I don’t feel the same about rolos. I like rolos. Yes they’re a little uptight and they don’t like anything, but they have other interesting aspects.

The first difference I noticed was the paisa attitude toward rolos. Every time I told a paisa I live in Bogota, they had something bad to say about rolos or Bogota in general. Every time. They don’t like the people. They don’t like the weather. They don’t like the city.

Despite what the woman in the video says about a rivalry, I never heard a rolo say a bad thing about Medellin or paisas. I hear the opposite. They say it’s the perfect weather, the women are gorgeous, the city’s beautiful, the people are friendly, etc. So it was surprising to hear the animosity being a one-way street. It’s not a phenomenon unique to Colombia, but rather how any of the world’s capital cities are viewed by outsiders from the same country. Arequipeños talk bad about Lima, but limeños have only nice things to say about Arequipa. Americans talk bad about New Yorkers or people from Los Angeles. They’re the same complaints small city people have about big city people. Colombians everywhere outside Bogota don’t like rolos.

My personal experience aside, there is this video some rolo made trashing Medellin. He goes a little far in trying to trump the TransMilenio over Medellin’s Metro – HA!

colombian-cupid-buttonPaisas say rolos are cold or ‘closed’. It’s true. Paisas are friendlier. They ask you where you’re from and talk to you. They want to be friends. I felt like a cold gringo, or rolo rather, because I had to cut conversations short on people. One paisa guy was nice enough to walk me to a store that was open after 8pm. After we got there he’s standing next to me outside in line. I had to tell him ‘Thanks a lot, see you later.’

I realized how rolos might come off like assholes when I signed up for the tourist plan at a gym in Sabaneta. The personal trainer who gave me the tour told me he doesn’t like rolos. Then he showed me the gym. When I size up a gym in Latin America, I only need to confirm four or five features total. A safe squat station, a bench not built for home use in the 60s, Olympic barbells, standard plate sizes, dip / pullup bars a plus, and that’s it. This gym had all this so I decided to invest 50,000 pesos for ten visits or whatever it was.

I indicated to the trainer the tour was over. I’m sold. He seemed hurt I didn’t want to see the second floor cardio equipment. He started showing me machines, saying things like “HAHM-STREEN” next to a seated leg curl (‘hamstring’ has no clear Spanish translation). I told him I didn’t ‘need help.’ He kept on with other machines and I was in a hurry to start my workout. I ignored him for a second, then went up front to pay. We greeted each other in the gym over the next weeks, but no talking.

Justin and Zac, the gringos I stayed with in Sabaneta, talk to all their neighbors. A rolofied gringo isn’t as inclined to stop, shake hands, and have a quick chat with every single guy sitting at the tables outside the goddamn store. ¡Qué frío!

Living in Bogota’s different, especially if you spend 99% of your life in the heart of the city. You walk past thousands of people every day (Subways aside, I didn’t think Beijing wasn’t congested at all compared to Bogota). In Bogota people are constantly trying to get your attention – to get you into their restaurant for lunch, selling shit, giving you flyers, begging, whatever. You walk around with a wall around you. Medellin’s not like that. So rolos come off “uptight.”

A gringo living in Bogota is missing out on an important part of Latin America. My first trip down here was to Recife, Brazil, a town about the size of Medellin over a thousand miles from Rio and Sao Paolo (super friendly people). That Latino friendliness was one of the main things that affected me and my trajectory in ultimately moving to South America. It was like that in Arequipa as well. But when you look at big capitals in Latin America, you lose that cultural aspect. In Bogota, Rio, Buenos Aires, people don’t care so much about you. And they’re not as impressed by a gringo.

Stay in a luxury apartment in Medellin.

Zac in Medellin told me he often doesn’t answer his phone because he has too many people calling him. I don’t have that problem in Bogota. Several times I’ll be drinking with a rolo I just met, all night long maybe, and we’ll change numbers at some point. And there’s no chance in hell that either of us are ever going to call the other. It’s happened so many times I was surprised in Medellin when people I met called me. One time I didn’t realize who the guy was until after we’d hung up. Another guy called to play basketball, and another guy called who had brought a chick up to the bar to meet me. You get all these phone calls and can’t NOT think how paisas are different.

Here’s something that will NEVER happen in Bogota with rolos: I was at a La Mota bar. I was drinking on some paisa’s bottle of Johnny Walker Red, talking with one of his buddies. Who knows what we’re talking about, when the guy asks if I’ve met any paisa chicks. I’d met a couple, and he said he has “amiguitas.” Would I like to meet one? Sure. He left and I forgot about it with the whiskey and all. So a half hour later the guy comes back with a little 20 year old dime with big boobs, butt, face, everything. We talk for a minute and I get her number and she takes off.

In Bogota, first of all, a rolo you just met will rarely offer you all the whiskey you want (sin escopolamina). Second, no rolo’s going to fetch a single, hot girl he knows to introduce to you. And finally, no rola higher than estrato 1 or 2 is going to come out the house to meet you.

Paisa hospitality’s worth a mention. I made friends with paisa Gustavo in Bogota a month before visiting Medellin. He would be there before me. My first day in Medellin I was drinking in Poblado around 10 am when I called him. He picked me up on his motorcycle around 11. He put a gram in my pocket. We got on his bike and sped through the city to meet gorgeous paisa girls he knew. Then a bar and more people, more rumba rumba rumba. He called me in the morning telling me to hurry up and get dressed, we’re going to a pool party at a finca. I barely threw on basketball shorts and a t-shirt in time to meet him. He brought me with him several times to see the town and meet people before he headed off to the coast. Great host!

Paisa Women

Medellin is said to have gorgeous women. It’s true.

The paisa blood is more Spanish than Indian, which generally ranks higher in Latin Americans’ beauty preferences. And maybe because of the regular sunshine the paisitas’ faces are cuter. But they also spend more time making themselves beautiful. “Se arreglan,” explained one paisa fella. I never saw a girl at the gym without makeup, and the workout clothes seem carefully selected. To go out on the town, they put in the effort to achieve pristine presentation.

Over half the women walking around are hot. This works with the paisa friendliness to create an interesting effect in those hot paisa women – they’re not difficult or stuck-up. Since beauty is so common, they can’t act special. Gorgeous women who have to compete with lots of other gorgeous women are just as friendly as less gorgeous women in the real world.

One night I’m drinking with a group in Sabaneta Park, and we’re sort of mixed with another big group. In another group drinking nearby was a gorgeous paisa chick staring at me. Staring without trying to hide it. So I put my arm over my head and gave her a full-arm wave, then turned back to my group and had a laugh. The next thing I know this girl’s right next to me introducing herself. She had beelined it right over. We had a meet and greet and a little chat, and it’s on to meeting the next gorgeous friendly paisa chick.

Here’s a video montage of hot paisas:

Paisa Talk

I tell people I’m fluent in Spanish. I’ve read books and watched movies without subtitles, but that doesn’t mean I always understand everything. You can give me a Colombian educated at Harvard – took classes and wrote essays in English, lived in Boston – and introduce him to a St. Louis project nigga and he’ll question his English proficiency afterward. So it goes when you encounter different dialects even if you’re fluent.

I rarely have trouble understanding people in Bogota, but in Medellin I often found myself saying, “¿Qué?” What are you saying? It’s different. It’s difficult. Some of them speak so their tongue never touches the roof of their mouth. I caught this when someone said, “La haía ejao.” La había dejado. Their lips touched just when the b should’ve been pronounced, and they made the vowels sound like they should in those words coming after d’s, but none of those consonants were actually heard. Or “¿Sae que?”sabes que.

It was a nice change to hear ‘parce’ at the end of sentences instead of ‘marica’, but too much ‘chimba’ and ‘gonorrea’.

I tried to find examples of paisa accents on YouTube for you, but there isn’t much. The first video isn’t a good example because that woman’s been living in the States, she seems professional, etc. If I can transcribe it, it’s not very paisa. Here was one paisita I found, but more a showing of Colombian profanity and slang than paisa talk.

This next video highlights regional Colombian accents from celebrities and TV appearances. The paisa accents, which include former president Alvaro Uribe, are between 0:26 – 0:43.

Paisa Men

Se arreglan. Not just the girls spend a lot of time on their appearance, the men do as well. The attention on the clothes, the hair, the style. I remembered that many of the paisas I’d met in Bogota struck me as gay at the time. Like the first one I met, or another two one night I never wrote about. Taking care of yourself and looking good is important if you want to get laid a lot, but it’s also a little gay. One rolo described them as ‘metrosexual,’ which is probably more the case.

However, metrosexual doesn’t fit the paisa stereotype, Juan Valdez:

Juan Valdez

The paisas were the men who settled the Andes Mountains, the mountain men. They grow coffee beans wearing those white cowboy hats, white shirts and slacks. They ride horses and drink aguardiente. The bandeja paisa is a total cowboy plate:

Bandeja Paisa – the paisa plate

I got a lot of macho paisa stories from a paisa friend in Bogota about his dad. When he taught my friend (his son) to swim, he did so by throwing him in a river. Sink or swim. The old man drank a Pony Malta mixed with raw egg every day of his life for sexual potency. He was proud of his eleven children by two women.

Also, paisas love to have sex with minors. You also hear incest stories – first cousin love.

Most of the ones I saw and met were more metrosexual, but cowboys are the stereotype. Then you have to consider Medellin’s crime rate is statistically the highest in Colombia. Paisas make horrible killers and thieves. Pablo Escobar was a paisa.

It’s difficult to say what paisas are. They’re paisas.

Here’s Botero’s depiction of a typical paisa family:

Paisa City

Medellin climate is warmer than Bogota. That means you never need a jacket, evenings are optional. Afternoons can be hot. I sweat hard every time I walked several blocks wearing jeans. It’s never uncomfortably hot, however.

The crime rate is the highest in Colombia, but I think it’s confined to the slums. Walking around you just don’t feel the same vibe as Bogota, which is especially noticeable walking around the downtown areas of each city. I spent most of my time in Poblado, Envigado, and Sabaneta. Medellin feels safer, but statistically it’s not.

Medellin has a Metro and Bogota doesn’t. It’s almost cleaner and more modern than Bogota at face value. You can’t escape thinking that cocaine built this city.

The Medellin metro area is 3.7 million, so definitely not a small city. But it has retained a small town attitude and friendliness because of (A) the cowboy culture and (B) the metro area includes suburbs (Envigado and Sabaneta) which have small town feels.

I went to a store to get food around 8:15 and it was CLOSED. It closed at 8 (this started the earlier story of a paisa who worked there showing me where a ‘late night’ store was). This kind of shit you don’t get in Bogota. One night Gustavo wanted to show me Envigado nightlife, so we sped there on his motorcycle. When we arrived it was dead, around 12 or 1 am on a Wednesday. One paisa I know here in Bogota said Medellin nightlife is really only good on Fridays and Saturdays.

With all these differences, can you believe the two cities are just a 30 MINUTE FLIGHT from each other???

  1. Ive really got to make it down there man, sounds amazing. But ya know, Ive had the opposite experience about Rolos talking mad shit on the Paisas, “theyre accent is horrible, theyre sluts, theyre uneduacated…” I dont know, bias bullshit and hte whole thing is just too general. But i love the comment about how ‘beauty is so common that they cant afford to act special’,..I wish that were the case in L.A.

  2. Very interesting post.

Great comment about the hypothetical Harvard-educated Colombiano questioning his English fluency after talking to somebody from the projects. It makes me feel better as Spanish in my 2nd language and, of course, sometimes I question myself too whenever I run into difficulties talking to native Spanish-speakers.

I didn’t understand everything in the video clip with the 2 paisas, of course, but I think I got the general drift of it.

How would a teetotaller do with the women in Colombia? It seems in your stories you meet the hot mamas out & around in the bars or just hanging around drinking.

  4. you hit the nail on the head with the paisa speak. i’m pretty good with spanish. i’m not fluent, but i get by just fine. I never really have a problem understanding – until i was exposed to paisa slang. my girlfriend and i were at a friends house and drinking some guaro, and our friend’s wife starts talking to my girlfriend….and there was the usual ‘me entiendes’ at the end of the jibberish she was saying…and I just looked at my girlfriend and was like ‘what the HELL is she saying?’ i could barely understand. once you get used to using ‘pues’ every third word and punctuating sentences with hijueputa (or hijuepucha depending on how vulgar they want to get), it’s not too bad. that being said, my girlfriend’s little sister is 16 and talking to her and her friends is a chore sometimes. her accent is pretty much EXACTLY like the girl wielding the drill (minus the constant cursing). paisa speak is certainly difficult to get used to.

they were kind of making fun of me because my spanish is so grammatically correct, they say that i speak perfect. it’s funny because in english, we can use slang whenever we want, but the more time I am in a non-english speaking country, the more i realize that slang and different regional dialects is really the measure of fluency. you can’t butcher a language unless it is really a part of you – for better or for worse.

i’m lucky enough to live in miami, so you get used to being around a lot of pretty latin girls, but it is nothing like i have seen in medellin. one of my pilot friends summed it up pretty nicely: the most beautiful women in the world are from south america. the most beautiful women in south america are in colombia. and the most beautiful women in colombia are in medellin. i was at la strada downtown and i have never seen so many beautiful women in one place in my life. . . it was to a point of absurdity.

paisa’s are great people. they will literally give the shirt off their back for a complete stranger. well, most of them will. i haven’t had any problems with safety in medellin at all when i was there except for one time hearing gun shots when i was in downtown – but it’s nothing i haven’t heard in new york or boston. it’s a city, and that stuff is bound to happen. that being said, i’m not going to spend any qt in the slums up on the hills at night time. we took a trip out to corona while i was down the last time and i asked if it was normal that military police with machine guns and a tank were normal on the sides of the roads. they told me that 10 years ago you would either get robbed, kidnapped or killed driving those roads. now, it never happens because they have become much more vigilant with security. even though that is a little intimidating, it was also eerily comforting knowing that they don’t fuck around.

  5. It’s funny, but people from province (it means out from Bogota) don’t like rolos, but they are migrating all the time to my city. Doesn’t mind the reason: study, work, business, etc. Besides that, after years in the capital they settle there with family, and curiously, their children will be some of those cold and close rolos. I think that on the same way that people from other corners of Colombia ask for respect to their culture and customs, if they go to Bta, they must respect and understand our way of living and our vision of life, and stop criticizing us.

I befriended all the guys working in the shops around my hotels and everyday I see chicas starring or smiling at me on the street. The problem in Bogota: too many people, too much stress, too much insecurity.

  9. Great post. I have lived in Colombia for 3 years, the last 2 in Medellin. I know Bogota pretty well too and I know a lot of Rolos from my time in NY. What you say is true. The Paisa’s are fun people. They are very happy and love to have a good time. They take a lot of pride in showing off their culture (Siempre a la orden!) and love to party. (tapa azul, por favor) The weather is incredible, 72 every day, a little sun, a little rain, whatever, it´s all good and it’s very casual. But they don’t like the Rolos, or the Costeños for that matter. They would never treat anyone badly, but they, more than the Rolos, sense the rivalry between the cities.

The Rolos, in my experience, love the Paisa. The Bogota culture is so much more… stuffy… and they play it to the max. They are reserved, sophisticated, well mannered and well spoken and very hard working. The women would never leave the house without looking their best and the men are pretty serious about it too. Everyone there looks like a model. But they are also very nice, generous people.
Bottom line, no matter where you go Colombia is the best place in the world.

  10. Great post , but two quick details : first , Paisas are NOT just from Medellin. Look it up and don’t ever ask someone from Medellin where Paisas come from. According to the people from this city they are the only Paisas and the best thing that’s ever happened to Colombia. Just like Argentinians think they’re God’s gift to mankind . Paisas are people from the departments of Caldas , Antioquia, Risaralda, and Armenia . Second , Medellin built with cocaine money ? Are you F&@king kidding me ?

Bogotanos are born in Bogota ,but their parents are from other parts of Colombia. All three types speak different ,have some different customs and have different ways of being. For that have lived in Bogota and the Paisa Regions ,you should pay more attention to the country you’re living in or visiting ,instead of just trying to get high. STOP THE IGNORANCE …..

  12. Paisas used to be known as hardworking people, unfortunately they have bred the worst and bloodiest criminals in Colombian history, Alvaro Uribe Vélez, the paramilitaries (the Castaño Brothers), Pablo Escobar, the list goes on and on.
The women were never known to be beautiful before, it’s all the plastic surgery that helped them look the way they do now. The proof is the posted video, silicon boobs and fake blond hair everywhere, with very few real natural beauty (see: http://www.soho.com.co/opinion/articulo/contra-paisas/8109). Bogotanas (with some exceptions of course but for the paisas it’s the opposite) are more confident in their natural beauty.
About the supposed majority of Spanish blood in the Paisa regions, genetic studies have shown that even Paisas have 90% indigenous blood on the maternal side, that is that as most mestizo Colombians the female ancestors were primarily indigenous and the paternal ones Spanish.
Let’s not forget Chocó is right next to Antioquia and the rest of the Paisa regions, which translates into some black ancestry seeping (nothing bad with this but if we’re speaking about supposed “blood purity” let’s remember Bogotá did not have African influence prior to recent times with the coming of people from other regions).
I very much prefer to be a well-spoken, educated, intellectual and still passionate and friendly bogotano mestizo proud of any indigenous ancestry than a sicario or paisa drug trafficker who cannot speak or write Spanish correctly (with probably any foreigner speaking and writing better than him) and who falsely thinks he’s pure Spanish or Basque or whatever having perhaps a black ancestor and obviously some indigenous ancestry as well.
I really hope the malediction of superficiality and easy money that affects places like Medellín, Cali, Pereira and the like is lifted from Colombia one day.
Thank God there is still some culture and intellectuality in Bogotá, the Athens of South America.

regardless of our ethnic background, what we do have is a natural beauty That sent many. And if you travel the city of Medellin, from Low-Income Neighborhoods, you can see women with beautiful faces Unlike Those seen in Bogota . In Addition, women are working and Studied. Antioquia has better Levels of education in the country.
The concern of my city is inequality, it is becoming more marked.

I travelled all over Antioquia and fell in love with Colombia and the Colombian people and made lots of friends there with lots of Colombian people.

  21. ególatras paisas, careerists and regionalist they have inherited from their ancestors that deviant and perverse misconception of being the best and unique in everything, which verifies that the ballast carried over many years as the focus of crime , contract killings, drug trafficking and prostitution still not been able to overcome and that is why they make use of arguments as trivial as saying that they have metro, which by the way, was not even paid for them, that thanks to an invention of President Belisario turn and his countrymen, which it end up being paid with money that belonged to the entire country, making it clear what they are thieves and liars.
Women supposedly the most beautiful … just like throughout Colombia, there are beautiful and ugly, but with the difference that paisas are superficial, unintelligent and profess one end to the silicone worship, as if the physical was the only important thing. Climate say it is better, I particularly like the weather in Bogota to work for its freshness and warm weather to go on vacation. As for fashion, they say, the medellin is the best, but when you go there, a widespread use of bluejeans, T-shirts and shorts … what fashion can be that? Breed also walk expressing that they are practically from another planet, not because they speak so much crap if Colombia is a multiethnic country, though I am not going to deny … .el mountaineer mountaineer is and will remain.
To say they are the best always appeal to discredit and speak disparagingly of the rest, mainly from Bogotá and its people, I want to remember that thirty or forty years we lived here very well and quietly, and it was when they began to invade these pests paisas bringing many of the social problems we have today, if you speak so badly of Bogotá and Medellín seems so good, I do not understand what do they do here, because they do not return to their city and let us live and enjoy ours who truly want .
The ego has given them up to show that they want to separate from Colombia, will surely be if someday are the Capital of something, because they can not deny that what always has hurt them is to Bogota and Medellin is not the capital of Colombia. This separation it seems like a great idea if we can finally be rid of so many socialills, and may I suggest as your new destination Cuba or Haiti.
It´s nice when others congratulate you for what you have for your achievements and for the good things you have, but that is clumsy and stupid boast and be screaming from the rooftops that you are the best at everything.

  24. Thanks for visiting my country. However, I wanna give you an advice: travel for every part of this country, not only Bogota and Medellin. A lot of colombians speaks truths about Paisas, they have a feeling of superiority against Colombia, mainly people from Bogota. You can strumble upon gorgeous and beautiful women in Bucaramanga, Barranquilla, Cartagena, Manizales, Pereria, Cali, etc. in everywhere in this country. The fact is that Paisas are very friendly with the foreign people and women will make a beeling for you because of that. Nevertheless, they’re different in regard to colombian people. Antioqueños have wished or hope to break away this country since a long time. I think their spiteful attitude against Bogota, it accounts for the fact that they feel Bogotanos are their old brothers and they are the capital of the country, and they are not. It seems a power game.

Maybe man to man and woman to woman, but I go on a regular basis as a Paisa to Bogotá and Women there love us…….

It´s a gene fenomena becouse indian communities here in Antioquia (Paisa land) were so weak that when spanish came, erase men from existence, so women genes were passed on for 150 year of colonization, only spanish guys came here. on the other hand the community of indians in bogota was so big that they couldnt kill them all, thats why you find so many indians in bogotá, the good part is that a beautiful rola looks like pocahontas…..

thats the reason of the 80 % european gene conglomerate here in Paisa land,150 year spanish guys fucking indian woman, one generation after another generation the european gene prevail…..

and not everything here was done with drug traffiking, Paisa enterpreneurs were the first to bring machinery to colombia, and when people from other parts of the country tried to take over Paisa industry, they created a merge trust called the Antioquenian industry group, the biggest of the country, to protect capital, we are enterpreneurs, and banks, food industry, concrete are part of that so dont think everything came from drugs….

and last but not least We are friendly proud people….

sorry about my writing english is not my strong suit…

  26. The author says that he doesn’t think that Rolas say anything bad about Paisas. Not true. My ex-girlfriend, who lived in Bogota, did a wickedly funny impersonation of a Paisa. The rivalry is, in fact, two sided.

My current girlfriend is from Cartagena, and she passionately dislikes both Rolas ans Paisas. There is nothing funny about her feelings.

  27. 1. “Also, paisas love to have sex with minors. You also hear incest stories – first cousin love.” Quite the claim to make with nothing to back it up. Where is the proof?

    2. I hear people in Bogota bad mouth Medellin all the time. They are insanely jealous but do not like to admit it and try to hide it. Pasias are just better people. They are more cultured, care more about their city and keeping it clean and are more friendly. I have never heard a single Paisa bad mouth Bogota. So your personal experience does not make it so and is fact the opposite of what I have heard most people say.

    3. The crime rate is the highest in Colombia, — Not true too. That is actually Cali.

  28. was Born in Bogotá ,then raised in Cartagena then Cali then back to Cartagena and finally going back to Bogotá…( And great grandson of a founder of Colombia) I find it counterproductive to engae in regionalism and prejudice across the board, Colombian strength it’s based on its diversity of cultures …each contributing an important role in the history and development of (la Gran Colombia) Colombia, now… because of this division it’s economy has not risen to the heights of its neighbouring countries to the North, but instead have nurtured a sentiment of political conflict and oppression of different races and ethnic groups.. Colombians are beautiful people in general, They are serviciales, simpaticos, amorosos, adventurers y amadores de la Vida (por ESO fueron nombrados: “happiest country in the world”. Different regions do have their idiocincrancy due to some cultural differences ,but that’s what makes Colombia a happy country.
Let’s keep Colombia a happy country, lets not adapt the system of division ,and racists rethoric other powerful societies have adopted . Rolos and paisas are both Beautiful Colombian people working together for a united Colombia……

  29. I’m from Bogota my wife is from Medellin, we live in Barcelona sometimes we talk about rivalry and differences betweens both cities. I noticed the biggest difference is depending who you ask no matter the city if you ask to a not educated person, what does he / she think about the other city? This person is going to talk bad about the other city, even if he or she has never been there. If you ask for one of the futbol (soccer) fanatic (barra bravas) about this subject, they will bring the worst of the vocabulary to manifest his point of view. The things change when you ask for an educated person, even if he is disagree with the other city will always bring a positive and good comment.
In my opinion things have changed I remember when I lived in Bogota NEVER heard a bad comment from the roll when talk about paisas, now is different you can hear bad things from paisas and rolos.

There is something that I do not like from los paisas, when they talk about their city, they really believe is the best city in the world and there is nothing else beyond Medellin, Come on! Is fine if you feel proud and love of your home land, but when you are closed to understand that there are problems is like cover your eyes in order to ignore the bad things, the negation is not the best way to prosper.

In Bogota is completely opposite if you ask to a rolo what is the caotic city in the world? probably they will say that Bogota is, like myself, I was born there I love that city but I dont feel comfortable knowing that I can not walk outside With my ipod or cellphone in my hands because the thieves, or knowing that Bogota is one of the expensivest cities in south America but the city is mess up and there is no room for a single car.
I have to admitt that I enjoyed reading this article, but I not completely agree with it, Medellin is not a city built with the drug, Medellin and paisas are excellent business people, Coltejer, EPM, Postbon, are part of the biggest companies in Colombia and they are form Medellin, I agree the paisas womans are gorgeous thats why i choose a paisa as my wife.

I think the guy who wrote this blog has his own point of view, he sees it from the perspective of a young “gringo” who wants to go around the world and getting high, drinking alcohol and fucking bitches, but I think way to see a whole country is not just that.

In conclusion rivalry will always exist, but do not let this divide us, the division only suits the politicians, both Medellin and Bogota have good and bad things, learn from each other.

Warms regards to my brothers paisas and rolos around the world

  31. Reality check for American expats and/or tourists in Colombia !!!

Colombia is not the U S of A

I get upset when I read all these negative opinions of Colombia and the Colombian people there.

Maybe, you would be happier living in Cleveland, Ohio, recently voted as the absolute worst city in the entire United States , or maybe you would like living in Chicago better as the Murder Capital of the United States.

Crime, drugs, gangs, mass shootings, ugly fat whining complaining gold digging women with bad attitudes everywhere you look and who dress like complete slobs everywhere you look in the USA…lol.

A country (USA) that is completely in the grip of and in the midst of complete and utter political, social, and economic chaos and anarchy. M

If you don’t love Colombia and the people, just get the hell out of there – nobody will miss you.

Nobody even likes you or even cares what you think, for that matter.

    You’re all low-rent, low-class,
    trailer trash anyways.

No wonder the Colombian people look down on you and laugh at you.

    You’re all a complete joke – a bad joke.

    Have a nice day !!!

    1. Brian, we appreciate all feedback in this corner of the metaverse. But I’d like to point out that you were a tourist on a tourist visa, and most of us in the Expat Chronicles community are/were residents. My short time in Colombia spanned all your visits. Before you comment again, you should repeat aloud to yourself, “I was a tourist, and I’m going to tell the residents something they don’t know.”

      1. I actually lived there In El Poblado in Medellin for a cumulative total of about 4 months but I traveled all over Antioquia
        and San Andres Island too.

I repeat, if there are so many things that you do not like about Colombia and the Colombian people, just simply pack your bags and move back to the United States or somewhere else. Nobody will miss you !!!

Reality check, Colombia is not the good old US of A, which is probably a very good thing.

Maybe, you would be happier living in NYC/Chicago/LA dodging bullets & gangs & eating lousy junk food and meeting fat, ugly, gold digging, constantly whining & complaining women with really bad attitudes. LOL

Yeah, I was a tourist, but why are so many American people moving down to Colombia and living very happily there? Maybe you are just nit-picking and looking for every little thing under the sun to complain about. Get a life !!!

Maybe, you would be much happier eating lousy junk food back in the US of A and getting fat !!! …lol

        Colombia Rocks !!!
